Bradley Sick is a veteran modeler with over 17 years of experience in the Visual Effects industry, having worked as a modeling supervisor on television commercials and many feature films while at Rhythm & Hues Studios. He was most recently the modeling supervisor on the Oscar-winning film Life of Pi (2012)

Hands-on Workshop (2-days)

Session type: Hands-on workshop using Autodesk Maya 2011
Pre-requisites: Intermediate knowledge of Autodesk Maya is required for you to follow the hands-on workshop.
Workshop content;
Day 1
  • The subset of essential modeling tools in Maya for VFX workflows
  • Setting up a Project/ Blocking with Primitives
  • Transforming Primitives into a coherent Mesh
  • Edge flows principles used in modeling for VFX
  • Soft Bevels, Extruding and Smoothing
  • Introduction to UVs ­ projections, editing, layout
  • Common modeling operations for VFX 
Day 2
  • Creating materials using Hypershade
  • Final Detailing and using NURBS
  • Mirroring and Duplicate Special for creature and prop modeling
  • Rigging considerations in VFX character and prop asset building
  • Mesh cleanup, mesh exactness, and repeatability
  • Setting up and rendering a turntable
  • Participant project screening and class critique
